Bansko - Location

            Bansko – this is a fascinating symbiosis of history, tradition and culture. Everything that the visitor could find here - ancient architecture, heroic history, authentic folklore, century old culture, preserved tradition and customs, special cuisine, incredible sense of humour and rich vocabulary - this mountain, rousing welcome town is of its kind a symbol of the Bulgarian spirit.

           The municipality of Bansko comprises the most beautiful part of the impressive Pirin Mountain, parts of the Razlog kettle, from the picturesque gorge of Momina Klisura on River Mesta and from the Dubrashki ridge in the Rodopi Mountains. Its territory comes up to 49,621 hca. The relief ranges from plain along the river valleys to hilly in the mountain and the pre-mountain region. The climate zone is transitional-continental with Mediterranean influence, and on the higher parts – of mountain type. The summer is brief and fresh, and the winter is snowy, mild, and continuous. The average January temperature is - 1.9C, the snow cover of the resort is held back at average for 6 months in the year, and the summer temperatures vary from +25C; to +35C.

            The nature is the greatest fortune of the municipality of Bansko. In 1962 the Service for the Protection of Nature pronounces the most beautiful part of Pirin Mountains as National Park 'Vihren'. In 1974 it is extended and renamed to National Part 'Pirin'. Since 1999 the Minister of Environment and Waters re-categorised the park into National Park 'Pirin' with an area of 40,332 hca. Within its boundaries are included the natural reserves 'Bayuvi Dupki - Djindjiritsa' and the 'Julienne'.

            This small part of the paradise includes in itself century old spruce-white fur forests, wide areas of pine-shrub formations, mountain meadows and rocky mountains, deep circuses and emerald lakes. Owing to this unique nature the National Park 'Pirin' is acknowledged as a site of world heritage and by an Order of UNESCO from 1983 is included in the Convention for Protection of the World Natural Heritage.

            Within the boundaries of the municipality are included the following populated areas: town of Bansko and seven villages: Dobrinishte, Mesta, Kremen, Obidim, Gostun, Philipovo and Osenovo.

            In Dobrinishte there is in operation ski-basis with seat-lift and good ski runs, taverns, and suitable hotel facilities. The mineral springs in the village provide the grounds for the development of spa tourism. The remaining Rhodopean and Pirin villages within the municipality provide opportunities for village tourism.

           Bansko is situated at an altitude of 925 m. It is at a distance of 150 km from Sofia, 150 km from Plovdiv, 60 km from Blagoevgrad, and 40 km from Gotse Delchev. It is connected with them by a bus transport. Through the municipality passes the railway Dobrinishte - Septemvri that has a connection with the railway trunk line Sofia - Plovdiv. Twelve kilometres asphalt and newly built road Bansko - chalet 'Vihren', as well as up-to-date cabin-lift connecting the town with the high mountains and the ski-zone.

            How can we arrive at Bansko?

   Regular bus lines from bus station ‘Ovcha kupel’, Sofia, as well as from the central bus station in Sofia, and the main towns in the country. In the winter season the tour-operators from Sofia propose packages for ski tourism, which include and organise transport services as well. The nearest airport is at 150 km, in Sofia.
